How the ATPL Course Runs
Three stages take you from theory briefing to flight test, built around the experience and type rating you already hold.

Optional Theory briefing
Your ATPL instructor runs a half-day briefing covering what you need to meet the knowledge requirements in the Part 61 MOS, tailored to your current experience and type rating.

Simulator training
Simulator training in your aircraft type, or in the KingAir B200 if you don’t hold a type rating, building you up to ATPL flight test standard.

ATPL flight test
Sit your flight test with your instructor, having trained directly toward the standard the test requires.

What does ATPL mean?
ATPL stands for Air Transport Pilot Licence. It’s the highest pilot licence CASA issues in Australia, and it’s what you need to act as pilot in command on an air transport operation, such as a scheduled airline flight.
What’s the difference between a CPL and an ATPL?
A Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL) lets you fly for hire or reward, but restricts you to second in command on multi-crew air transport operations. An ATPL removes that restriction and lets you act as pilot in command. Most airline pilots hold a CPL first, then complete their ATPL theory and flight test as their career progresses.
What’s covered in ATPL theory?
CASA’s ATPL theory syllabus covers subjects including air law, aircraft general knowledge, flight planning and monitoring, human performance, meteorology, navigation and operational procedures.
What are the requirements to get an ATPL in Australia?
